Desert Devil Tumbleweed

symmetrical photo of a barbed wire fence in a field and overcast
There’s never gonna be a second coming
He’s a one-and-done, forever-on-the-run
Ever after of ain’t-ever-gonna-be.
Still, I’ll help myself to gettin’ all entangled
With that desert devil tumbleweed.
A prince of midnight barroom smoke and mirrors
He’ll make his closing, well-timed whiskey whisper
And I’ll feign the latest victim to believe
‘Cause I’m down for being one more one-too-many
For that desert devil tumbleweed.
Where he’s from, I’ll never know
Why he left and where he’ll go.
He’ll leave nothing, but a worthless apology.
And he’ll never regret
All the one-nights he’ll forget.
Dusty winds will always blow his conscience clean.
He’s a desert devil tumbleweed.
There’s never gonna be a second-coming.
He’s a one and done, forever-on-the-run
Ever after of ain’t-ever-gonna-be.
Still, tonight I’ll love him like he’s never leavin’.
Oh, that desert devil tumbleweed.
No goodbye devil tumbleweed.

*Inspired by the tumbleweeds seen blowing across the desert while driving through the Southwest.
